Some General Sources of Information about New York’s entrepreneurial community and investment activities

According to the quarterly Money Tree report compiled by the NVCA (National Venture Capital Association) and PWC (PriceWaterhouseCoopers), the New York metro area is consistently among the largest regions of investment, both in number of companies funded and dollars invested. In 2011 $2.7B were invested in New York, and for the first time New York passed New England as the second largest region of investment after Silicon Valley:

According to the New Tech City report, published in May 2012 by the Center for an Urban future New York had a growth of 32% in number of VC deals from 2007 to 2011, compared to negative growth in all of the other major centers of startup activity: Silicon Valley, New England and Southern California. The increase in venture capital investments had a positive effect on the IT sector job growth, with an increase of 28.7% vs. an increase of 3.6% in private sector jobs for the 2007-2012 period.

The Made in NY Digital Map, published by NYC Digital, an entity part of the mayor’s office for media and entertainment, gives a good sense of the many startup companies and investment firms that make New York their home.

NYC Digital also publishes New York City’s Digital Roadmap, spelling out the objectives set by the mayor to make NY a premier Digital City. In order to do that, the city had embarked on a series of Private/Public partnerships to improve education, broadband access, social engagement and government transparency.

One of these partnerships is the comprehensive new (coming soon) StartupNYCwebsite, the ultimate directory to over 5,000 startups, investors and New York City services for entrepreneurs.
